Company Legacy
The man behind the company, John Deere, was determined to establish his own small tool manufacturer and repair business in 1837 in Detour, Illinois. He built his first steel plow from a saw blade within only a few years. His son, Charles Deere, followed by Charles’ son-in-law, William Butterworth, carried the company legacy into the 20th century.In 1923, Deere & Company released their very first John Deere tractor. This was a result of the company’s purchase of the Waterloo Boy line of tractors, which sold quite well from 1918 to 1923. Butterwood had been successfully steering the business towards tractor manufacturing for a decade. The popularity that followed their initial offerings led Deere & Company to start focusing more of their efforts on developing new, innovative tractors for American farmers.
