Company Legacy

A man drives a 2019 John Deere 512 through the grassThe man behind the company, John Deere, was determined to establish his own small tool manufacturer and repair business in 1837 in Detour, Illinois. He built his first steel plow from a saw blade within only a few years. It wasn’t long before his company became a well-known manufacturer of plows and other agricultural tools for the remainder of the 1800s. He passed away in 1886. His son, Charles Deere, followed by Charles’ son-in-law, William Butterworth, carried the company legacy into the 20th century.

In 1923, Deere & Company released their very first John Deere tractor. This was a result of the company’s purchase of the Waterloo Boy line of tractors, which sold quite well from 1918 to 1923. Butterwood had been successfully steering the business towards tractor manufacturing for a decade. The popularity that followed their initial offerings led Deere & Company to start focusing more of their efforts on developing new, innovative tractors for American farmers.
