Lubricate Moving Parts 

Your planter’s moving parts (usually sprockets or chains) are primarily responsible for ensuring that the seeds are spread evenly throughout the field. Thus, it’s crucial that you keep these moving components well lubricated. If you don’t, it won’t be long until things start to rust and you’ll need to send your planter in for repairs. 

Inspect Gauge Wheels 

There are all kinds of different things that can go wrong with your planter’s gauge wheels, so be sure to inspect them on a regular basis. Make sure that there are no gaps between the gauge wheels and the disc opener, as that can allow dirt to find its way into your furrow. You should also check the rubber for any holes or cracks, as well as make sure that nothing has become stuck in there. The tread should be worn evenly throughout.  

Wash Your Planter in Between Seasons 

Planters tend to be used only during planting season and spend the rest of the year in storage. It’s important that you wash your planter before you store it away. Otherwise, you can end up with a rusted piece of equipment. Do not forget to lubricate your planter’s components once it has fully dried.
