A Brief History of AG Equipment

While people have been farming for millennia, the last few hundred years have seen a lot of changes when it comes to agricultural equipment. If you’re interested in learning a bit more about how farming got to the points it’s at now, check out this brief guide from the experts at PrairieLand Partners.

Early Years

Agriculture has a very long and complex history, but one thing is certain: back then, as now, people wanted a way to increase their efficiency so that they could do more with the same amount of effort. Farming has always been hard work, and while tools like the plow, hoe, and sickle may seem primitive by modern standards, they were revolutionary at the time. These earliest examples of farm machinery are even older than recorded history, and many are still in use in some form or another.

Animal Labor and Mechanization

In the quest for greater and greater efficiency, domestic animals soon became an agricultural mainstay. Just one ox, draft horse, or similar animal could do the work of many people without much difficulty. At the same time, different civilizations invented, adapted, and shared various farming devices and techniques among themselves. This equipment, more complex than the hand tools of old, would eventually evolve into the mowers, threshers, reapers, binders, planters, drills, and hay rakes used today. Though mechanization would eventually replace domesticated animals on most farms with tractors and the like, it’s hard to understate the importance these animals had.
